Description
Sally, a 3-year old, is an amazing dog, according to her handler, Russell McCord. She won 23 Open Ranch and Nursery classes before the age of 2 and was second 13 times, resulting in her winning the the Nursery and Open Ranch Dog of the Year in Texas for 2 years. Last March, she won her first big open trial in Texas and is qualified to run in Open at the Finals this September. She is a bit unusual in that, when not working sheep, she hunts lizards on Russell’s ranch.
Russell is the current President of the USBCHA (United States Border Collie Association), which is responsible for putting on the National Sheepdog Finals and National Cattledog Finals. Calling them “National” is a bit off a misnomer as the association includes Canadian handlers and dogs as well, so it is more aptly described as the North American Nationals. The Nationals will be held this year in Carson City Nevada, hosted by Mary Minor, who is also a handler here at Soldier Hollow. He was formerly the Director of Judges for the National Cutting Horse Association for 16 years. Retired now, he says that “the dogs are our everything in live now.”
