Description
Magic is a 4 year old female border collie. This is her first year running in Open trials. Magic is very sweet and affectionate. She loves to have something in her mouth to carry and at the end of a trial and she will often want to carry Kay’s crook or hat. Magic was Open Ranch dog of the year in Texas last year so now she is moving up to the challenge of open. She’s a bit timid with sheep so this will be a challenge for her. Magic’s sire is Faansie Basson’s Finn, a very famous trial dog, and her mother is Jules.
Kay lives in Normangee, Texas, which is just outside of College Station, the home of Texas A&M University. She became involved in herding in 1988 with a smart little sheltie. She got her first border collie, Grace, in 1992 and started in novice competitions with her in 1995. Kay worked as a veterinarian initially as an equine intensive care specialist, then making a career change to specializing in behavior and training problems in dogs. She studied with many of the top behaviorists and trainers in the country, including trainers at Sea World. Since 1992 Kay has trained hundreds of dogs of all breeds and helped multiple dogs suffering with anxiety and aggression. She trained two of the Reveille mascots -rough collies- for Texas A&M. Kay recently co-authored with Beth Kerber a book on training border collies for herding.
